Colva Beach Goa – Places To visit, Activities and Best Time To Visit

Colva beach is located in the Colva village, which is a coastal village in the South of Goa. The white sandy beach extends to about 2.4 km. Colva was initially a barren land without any human intervention.

Later it was occupied by Fisherfolk community. Portuguese took over Colva and ruled it from 1510 to 1961. The place has numerous Portuguese building and it tells about the Portuguese architecture.

Colva beach is a very popular tourist place and its elegance attracts everyone.

Best Time To Visit Colva beach

The beach can be visited any time of the year but the best suited time is November to March. This is the winter season and there are many occasions take place during this time. The climate is cool and it supports travelling. Shacks are available during this season.

This place is located 2 km from Colva. The location has the Portuguese touch still in it. It is one of the most visited tourist places near Colva beach. Benalium is a sacred place for Hindus as well as Christians. According to Hindu Mythology, Lord Parashurama shot an arrow in this area and ordered God Varuna (Sea God) to extend up to the place where the arrow has landed. Only due to this incident, the name Banahalli (Ban- arrow, Halli- village) came into birth. Father Joseph Vaz was born in this village; therefore, Christians consider this as an important place. You can explore the beautiful paddy fields in this region. You can visit two beaches here namely Benaulim beach and Vaddi beach. It is a white sandy beach suited for water sports.

Church Of Our Lady Of Mercy

Church Of Our Lady Of Mercy is also called as Colva Church and Nossa Senhora das Merces Igreja em Colva. In 1630, this place was a chapel affiliated to Benaulim Parish. During 1638, Fr. Bento Ferreira who is said to be the founder brought the statue of Infant Jesus to the church. The feast of Infant Jesus (Fama) is one of the famous festivals celebrated in this church.

Burnzam Ghor is popular for its architectural style. This mansion was built in 1790. It has a double storied façade and the view of the mansion inside is an admirable one. It had seven gables due to which this place is also called the house of seven gables. But now it has only three gables. If you are interested in history, you will really enjoy this place. This beach is situated across the Sal river. Betul is a coastal village where fishing is the major activity. Betul beach is not that much populated and it has silvery sand. Mahalaxmi Temple

The Main deity is Goddess Mahalaxmi. This Mahalaxmi Temple was built during the 19th Century. The Goddess here has the resemblance of Goddess Mahalakshmi in Kolhapur. The deity is said to have Linga on her head. She is believed to bring in peace to those visiting this temple.

The Church of St John

The church is located 2 km from the Colva beach in Benaulim. It is now located over the hill. Initially, it was situated near the shores. Father Joseph Vas was baptized during 1651 in the Chapel.

How To Reach Colva Beach

By Train – There is no railway station for Colva. The nearest station is Madgaon Railway Station which is 9 km away from the beach approximately. From the station, you can travel by cab. The other railway station is Karmali station which is at a distance of 32 km from the beach.

By Road – There is no direct bus facility to Colva. Panjim is nearest city to Colva, which is easily accessible from major cities of India. From Panjim, you can have frequent buses to Colva. It is also possible to hire taxi and cabs from Panajim.

By Flight – The nearby airport for Colva is Dabolim airport. The airport is approximately 21 km from Colva beach. It is easily accessible from the airport to reach Colva.  You can board a bus or hire a cab to come to Colva.
