Devipatnam History

Devipattinam is one of the coastal villages in Ramanathapuram District, Tamil Nadu. This village is known for its ancient pearl business and seaport during the early 20th century.

Now the main occupation of locals in farming and sea is used for Fishing. Though this place is predominated by the Muslim population (due to the settlement of Arab traders), harmony is always maintained by all religions.

Devipattinam Beach

This is the prime beach in Devipattinam. Here you can go for Boating, swimming and see beautiful sunset and sunrise along the seashore.

Winter (November – February)

During winter’s, you can see this place having both hot Sunny days and also heavy Rainfalls. The weather during these months can be unpredictable as the weather keeps changing, during the day may raise up to 36 C° and night temperature goes down up to 24 C°. But these are ideal times to visit this place as you can enjoy the place with awesome weather. But check the weather condition, before visiting Devipattinam during this season.

Navabashanam Temple

It is a Hindu pilgrimage place located in the Bay of Bengal. This place is believed to have Puranic stories connected to it. The Navabashanam Temple has 9 idols of the Navagrahas placed in the middle of the sea. The main attraction of this temple is that the idols are seen only when the tides are low and at high tides, they will submerge into the sea water.

When Lord Rama was going to invade Sri Lankan to fight with Ravana and set his wife Sita free, he first performed the Navagraha puja here in Devipattinam. The puja is to help him to get the good deeds and also help him to win over the Ravana in the fight.

In the Hindu religion, the Navagrahas holds a special place in their life and astrology, as it is believed that these deities regulate and monitories our deeds in the life. And so, this place is considered as a very sacred place and Several Hundreds Hindu devotees flock to this temple to do Navagraha puja to lead a happy life. And also offer last rights ritual to forefathers here.

Thilakeshwar Temple

This is another old Hindu Temple in Devipattinam. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva called as Thilakeshwar and Goddess Parvati who is also known as Durga is called as Soundaryanayaki. The Thilakeshwar temple is also having a mythology story pinned to it which indicated like Goddess Parvathi/Durga killed the powerful demon Mahishasura here using her powers. Here the Shrine of the Goddess Durga is seen in magnificent look with 8 hands.

Uppur is a small village near Devipattinam. This place is known for a very old Hindu Temple known as Veyil Ugantha Vinayagar temple. The main deity is Vinayagar and Goddess Amman (Thayar). The History of the temple dates with 500-1000 years and have a mythology background too. It is said that Lord Rama worshipped the Veyil Ugantha Vinayagar in this temple for victory in the fight before heading towards Sri Lanka. Every devotee who visits Navabashanam Temple temple will also visit this temple.

Athiyuthu Beach

It is a Small beach 17 km far from Devipattinam village. This less known beach is perfect for the people who don’t prefer crowd and want to enjoy the beach. There is a very small village known as Athiyuthu village near to this beach.
