Digha beach was discovered in the 18th century by the British. It was initially called as ‘Beerkul’. The beach extends to 7 kilometers, so it is one of the widest beaches. The place is surrounded by Casuarina trees. Warren Hastings who is the first Governor General of Bengal called this beach as ‘Brighton of the East’. John Frank Smith, an English tourist attracted by the beauty of this beach started living here in 1923. Just 2 km from the old Digha beach, there is another beach called as new Digha beach. This beach is wider and less crowded.




Best time to visit Digha Beach –  Winter (November – February)

Winter season is the best time to visit Digha beach. The temperature ranges from 3 degrees to 24 degree Celsius. So, this period is best suited for all kinds of beach sports. The climate will be pleasant and this  enables you to visit different places. Summers are not recommended and the hot climate acts as the hurdle for enjoyment. It is one of the major attractions near Digha beach. The most important features of the science center are the Eskimos igloos, Jurassic Age Park are few of them.

Subarnarekha River

This river is also called as Swarnarekha River and is just 12 km from Digha beach. It originates from Chota Nagpur Plateau. The meaning of Subarnarekha is ‘line/streak of gold’. When you walk along the beach in Udaypur village, you will find the meeting place of the river and the sea.




Amarabati Park

Amarabati park is less than a kilometer distance from the Digha beach. It has a great surrounding with greenery everywhere and has a mini lake. Chandaneshwar Temple

Chandaneshwar temple is one of the popular Shiva temples in Odisha. From Digha, you can reach this place within a short time. It is just 8 km. Pana Sankranti is the New Year in Odia calendar where many pilgrimages from different places visit this temple. The temple has a great architecture and is one of the important places to visit when in Digha beach.

Bhusandeswar Temple

How to reach Digha Beach

By Road

There are regular buses from major cities in India to Kolkata. From Kolkata, there are several buses to Digha beach and it will take approximately 4 to 5 hours. You can also hire a cab to reach the destination.

By Air

Nethaji Subash Chandra Bose Airport is the nearest airport to Digha. There is no airport in Digha. After reaching the airport, you can reach Digha by car or bus. The airport is at a distance of 139 km from Digha. The next nearest airport is Bhubaneswar Airport which is 230 km from the beach.

By Train

Digha does not have any railway station. The nearest station is Digha Flag Station which is 2 km from Digha and other nearest station is Ramnagar Bengal which is 7 km.
