Pulicat Lake – Bird Sanctuary, Places To visit & Best Time To visit

Pulicat also known as Pazhaverkadu, is a seashore town in Thiruvallur district on the border of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. During the 17th century, the Dutch are said to be settled here. Due to its location in the Coromandel Coast it has attracted Portuguese and the British for trade purpose.

Winter (October – March)

Winter can be the best time to visit Pulicat. With the cool climate, you can easily travel and explore the natural beauty, and the exotic birdlife. During the summer, the climate will be very hot thereby traveling becomes tougher. Monsoons season here has unpredictable rains and floods.

Being the second largest brackish water in India, Pulicat Lake or Lagoon is one of the famous tourist attractions in India. It is also called as Pazhaverkadu Eri. This Lagoon is one of the major reasons to bring rain to the state. The lake is separated from the Bay of Bengal and the water has salinity due to the mixing of fresh water with sea water. It is formed with three rivers namely Arani River, Kalangi River, and Swarnamukhi River. Fishing is one of the major activity in this place. When coming here, you can explore various kinds of fishes, bird species, and reptiles. Thus giving you a visual wildlife treat.

Pulicat Bird Sanctuary is a wetland thus acting as a habitat of a variety of fauna. You can look for various species of fishes, prawn, polychaete worms, prawns, mollusc, and a number of birds. Few of the birds include Greater Flamingos, Pelicans, Sea Gulls, Egrets, Herons, a wide variety of ducks and Kites. Apart from this, the place is also rich in flora. It has an area of 481 kilometers.

Fort Geldria

This fort was built by East India Company in 1613. It acted as the important part in trading. It is one of the historical monument and a must go place in Pulicat.

Paaleeswarar Temple

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is located in Thirupalaivanam, 9 kilometers from Pulicat. The temple was built by Cholas and it is in the Gajabrushta architectural style.

Sri Adhi Narayana Perumal Temple

This temple is completely built with Laterite blocks. It is said that the temple was built in the 13th century during the Vijayanagara period and it is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Timing: 5PM to 7PM (All days of the week)

Jadarayar Temple

It is said that this temple was built nearly 500 years back and the main God of this temple is Lord Shiva. It takes one hour from Pulicat to reach this place.

Chindamaniseswarar Temple

The main God here is Lord Shiva and it is located in a village called Karungaali. This temple is in between the sea and the forest. It is said that the temple is 1500 years old that is during the Chola period.

Dutch Cemetery

It is one of the important places to visit in Pulicat. Dutch Cemetery is being maintained by the Archaeological Department and its history starts from 1622.

Things to do in Pulicat

Visit Pulicat Lake

Pulicat Lake is filled with natural sceneries. Explore the nature and have a chance to see several birds in the Lake. Due to some tragic incidents, now boating is not allowed.

Bird watching in Pulicat

You can view both terrestrial and aquatic birds in the bird sanctuary. The Lake is often visited by the migratory birds from Central Asia and Eastern Europe. The bio-diversity of the place attracts several birds and among them, Greater Flamingos is very famous. Few of the birds which migrate here are, Grey Pelican, Painted Stork, Grey Heron, Ducks, Marbled Teal, Terns, Egrets, Kites and Partridges, Quails, Sea Gulls and Waders such as curlews, stilts, plovers, sandpipers, lapwings, and redshank. It also has wetland birds such as Shoveler, Garganey, Gadwall, Marsh Sandpiper and Black-tailed Godvit. Grey Pelican and Open-billed Stork are some resident birds here.

Apart from birds, you can also have a look at crabs, clams, mussels, oysters, snails, fish worms, insects, spiders, sponges, anemone, prawns, plankton and more.

There are several water sports here since the place is near the beach. You can have pleasure by participating in those activities.

Sea Foods

The place is also famous for its seafood. You can get fish, prawn, crabs, at cheaper rates. The food is fresh and you can enjoy them in that place.

There are many temples and churches here which are very old. Few temples here are Thirupalaivanam Shivan temple, Sri Samayeswarar temple, Perumal temple, Jadarayar temple, Chindamaneshwar temple and more. The churches here are Shrine Of Our Lady Of Glory, Dutch Church, Holy Faith Assembly, Bcm Church Neyveli and more

How to reach Pulicat?

Pulicat can be easily reached from Chennai. From North of Chennai, it is just 60 kilometers.

By air
You can reach Chennai airport and from there it is approximately 74 kilometers. You can hire a cab from there and reach the place.

By Train
Railways to Chennai from other major cities of India are well connected and you can reach Chennai railway station from there you can hire a cab. The other way is Sulurpeta which is the closest railway station to Pulicat and it is just 13 kilometers from the station to Pulicat.

By road
There are several buses from CMBT (Chennai Moffusil Bus Terminus) to reach Pulicat. Within hours you can reach Pulicat.
