Best Places To Visit Near Bassein Beach Vasai and Best Time To Visit

Vasai which was historically called as Bassein during Portuguese rule is a peaceful city in Palghar district, Maharashtra. It has a lot of historical significance attached to it. It was once belonged to Thane district.

The famous Bassein fort is in this city. The fort was captured by Maratha army in 18th century and defeated after the battles of Vasai in 1739. In 17th century this city is used to build ships.

Bassein fort was actually built by the Gujarati Ruler Bahadur Shah in 16th century. It was later captured by the Maratha King. It is located at a distance of 3.5 Km from the Bassein beach. The fort is surrounded by water on the three sides. The main attraction inside the fort is the citadel, which is present inside the fort. It takes you around 3 hours solidly to see the entire fort.

The Vasai battle happened between Marathas and the Portuguese rulers of the town. Chimaji Appa, a brother of Peshwa Baji Rao I, was the king of the Marathas during that time. The victory of this battle is the biggest achievement during the rulle of Baji Rao I. This fort also played a major role in First Anglo-Maratha War.

There are 2-3 food stalls around the fort, where you can taste local food. It hosts a museum inside and you can snap some pictures of it.

By Road

Mesmerizing Ganpatipule Beach, Temple and Prachin Konkan Museum

The local here believe that the Lord Ganesh has moved to Pule and settled there from his original place, Gule. Gule is just few miles from Pule. So, this the reason this place has got its name Ganpatipule. Still now there is temple of Lord Ganesh near the beach called as Ganapati Swayambhu Temple, which is discovered around 1600 years ago and believed that the idol is self-created.

Ganpatipule is the birthplace of the marathi poet, Keshavasuta. He was born in 1866 and there is also a monument dedicated to him and his work. The Ganpatipule beach is one of the most attractive beaches on the Konkan Coast. It is a very small town in Ratnagiri district.

It is a 4000 years old and awesome temple dedicated to lord Ganpati. Swayambu Ganpati Temple is located near the Ganpatipule beach. The name “Swayambhu” refers to the self-originated. The main idol is Lord Ganpati and it is believed by the locals that the idol is self-manifested. There will be a copper idol of Ganpati, placed in the Sanctum Sanatorium. You can see that during the sun rise, the idol absorbs the sun light and the sunlight penetrates into the idol.

Jaigad Fort

The Jaigad Fort was built by Bijapur Sultanate and lost it to the Naiks later. Later the control came under Shivaji and managed by Balaji Vishwanath Peshwa. In 1713, it was handed over to Kanhoji Angre and in 1818; it was captured by british after Anglo Maratha War.

It is on a cliff and it is one of the chief ports of Western Coast of India. The view from the top of the fort will be breathtaking, as you can see the junction or the meeting point of Shastri River and Arabian Sea. The fort was constructed along with another fort called Vijaygad Fort. It was built after a long struggle and a boy named Jaiba Malhar, sacrificed his life for constructing the fort. And thus the name of the fort derived the boy’s name.

Jaigad Lighthouse

The lighthouse is at the western side of the fort on a bastion, known as Siddha Buruj and it is now managed by the government of India. You will get a good experience on visiting the top of the lighthouse.

The Jaigad Lighthouse is built in the year 1832 by British army officer John Oswald. It is 180 years old and still guides all the sailing ships between Dabhol and Ratnagiri.

Thiba palace is one of the major attractions in Ratnagiri, which lies in a stretch of 27 acres. From this point, you can see the amazing view of Someshwar creek, Bhatye Bridge to pawas and beautiful sunset. As it stands quite high from the sea level, you can also see the Rajiwada port from here. As there is a plan going on for converting this palace as a museum, you can see many sculptures of Lord Vishnu, Lakshmi, Brahma, Saraswati and Shiva. The main point is that you can touch those sculptures and feel it a bit. In addition to that, you can also see some ancient pots, which will be kept for display.

When in 1935, Burma (now Myanmar) got separated from British India. The British took over it and arrested the king of Burma (ThiBaw), who has ruled for 6 years. To separate him from his nation, the British kept him at Ratnagiri in House arrest. It was built by the British in between 1910 and 1911. The palace is a building of 3 floors. In which the first floor consist of one dance hall built with marble tiles. Apart from these, the flooring and windows are decorated with wood making it one of the major attractions. There is also an idol of Buddha, which was brought by the king and kept at the back side of the palace.

By Air

The nearest airport to Ganapatipule Beach is Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai. It is at a distance of 375 Kms. Although there are airports in Ratnagiri and Ganapatipule, they are not operational for commercial purpose. You can also reach here from Pune International airport, which is 342 Km away. From there you can hire a taxi or bus to reach the beach.

By Train

The nearest railway station is Ratnagiri station, which is at a distance of 30 Kms from the beach. The station is well connected with the entire railway network and connects all the major cities of India.

By Road

There are numerous private buses and state buses such as Maharashtra State Transport (MSRTC) plying from major places to Ganapatipule.  The beach is located at a distance of 325 Km from Pune, 345 Km from Mumbai, 191 Km from Sangli, 153 Km from Kolhapur, 295 Km from Goa and 25 Km from Ratnagiri. Tarkarli is a small village in Malvan taluka in Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra. Between 6th century and 8th century, the town was ruled by Chalukyas and they were followed by Devgiri, Vijayanagar, Adilshahi, Shivaji and to the british rule in 17th century.

Tarkarli Beach is situated at a distance of 8 Km from the Malvan town and is also known as the Queen Beach of Sindhudurg. It is located at a place, where the Arabian Sea and Karli River joins.

Sindhudurg Fort is a four centuries old historic fort built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The construction of the fort was initiated in 10th, November 1664 and was completed on 1667. To provide a defense for this main fort, smaller forts were built near to it in Rajkot, Sarjekot, Bharatgad, Bhagwant gad, Nivati and other places. These sea forts blocked the enemies and made them impenetrable inside the main fort. The fort is also used to inspect the intervention of the external naval powers like the British, the Portuguese and the Abyssinians.

Sarjekot Fort is located at distance of 3 Km from the Sindhudurg Fort and Malvan jetty on the entrance of Talashil Estuary. The fort was built in the year 1668 by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It is one of the apt places to enjoy the spectacular view of the sunrise and sunset.

Padmagarh Fort

Padmagarh Fort is built near Tarkarli in 17th century by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Though it is constructed to strengthen the outer defense, it is used as the main ship building base for shivaji’s navy.

You can visit the fort by taking on a boat ride. Though the boat ride seems scary, it is worth and impressive. The fort is well known for its unique architecture as it is surrounded by water on all the sides. There will be regular ferry service from the Malvan port except during the monsoon seasons from the months of June to September.

You can see a temple dedicated to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at the entrance and also the swords used by him inside the fort. Take a small walk around the fort wall to enjoy the breathtaking view of the sea. There will also be small shops inside the fort to provide some drinks and eateries.

Malvan Marine Sanctuary

The Malvan Marine Sanctuary is located near the Sindhudurg fort and it is announced as Marine Sanctuary on 13th April 1987. The area under water is loaded with beautiful corals, rare water plants, exotic and colorful fishes and much more. You can see a variety of flora and fauna in the sanctuary. This is a old temple of lord Mahapurush in Tarkarli. It is located at a distance of 1.2 Kms from the Tarkarli Beach. Here the Ramnavmi is celebrated grandly by the locals and tourists every year. Prior to the celebration there will be several dramas and plays organized in Marathi.

Jai Ganesh Temple is nearer to the rock garden, which is at a distance of 7.2 Kms from the Tarkarli beach. The temple is designed and built in a typical Maharashtrian style, considering the complete vastu shastra and astrology principles by an astrologer Jayant Salgoankar. The main idol appears to be with the consorts (Riddhi and Siddhi) and is made of gold. Inside the premises, there will be 8 different mudras of lord Ganesh. There will be a small pond inside, where you can sit and relax for a while.

By Train
There is no railway station in Tarkarli. The nearest railway station to Tarkarli is Kudal, Sawantwadi Railway and kankavli railway station which is 32 Km, 39 Km and 52 Km from Tarkarli beach. From these railway stations, there will be regular buses, taxis and cabs plying to Tarkarli beach. You can catch up with your convenient mode of transport.

By Road
The beach is well connected with Malvan by bus and rickshaw. There will be frequent luxury, private and state transport buses from Mumbai, Goa, and Pune to Malvan. To avail the tickets at affordable rates consider booking them as early as possible.

The nearest Airport to the Tarkarli beach is Dabolim, Goa, which is just 132 Kms away.
