Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram (meaning a great wrestler city) is established by Pallava king Narasimhavarman in 7th century. It is located along the Coromandel Coast of Bay of Bengal. The distance between Chennai to Mahabalipuram is 58 Kms, the actual travel time is around 1 hour and 30 minutes. From CMBT in Chennai, one can take a bus directly to Mahabalipuram. There are several Volvo AC buses available for comfortable journey.

If you have your own vehicle, you can reach Mahabalipuram using the OMR or ECR roads. ECR is a more scenic road and you will enjoy the drive. If you are driving on the weekend, plan your trip in advance to avoid traffic.

How To Reach Mahabalipuram From Pondicherry

The distance between Pondicherry and Mahabalipuram is around 97 KMS and the travel time is around 2 hours.

The easiest option is to travel by bus as there is no train option between Pondicherry and Mahabalipuram. All the buses that ply between Pondicherry and Chennai stop at Mahabalipuram.

If you are traveling by your own vehicle, you can travel through ECR and the drive is always scenic through ECR road.
