Kovalam Beach Chennai

Kovalam (Covelong) beach is located near the fishing village Kovalam. Nawab of Carnatic developed a port town in Kovalam. After that French took over the place and later the British destroyed it in 1752.

Most of the beaches in Chennai lack rocks. This can be said as one of the specialties of Kovalam beach in Chennai. But this beach is not apt for swimming, as it has strong current.




How to reach Kovalam beach in Chennai?

Kovalam beach is located on the way towards Mahabalipuram along the East Coast Road. Distance from Chennai to this location is 40 kilometers.

The best way to reach Covelong beach from Chennai is through road. There are direct buses from CMBT. There are also direct buses from Adayar and OMR.

If you are travelling by car, you either take OMR road via Kelambakkam or ECR road via Thiruvanmiyur to reach Kovalam.

Winter (November – February)

Winter season is the suited time to visit Kovalam beach in Chennai. The temperature ranges from 21 to 29 degree Celsius. You may also experience rainfalls randomly. The main purpose of Madras Crocodile Bank was established to conserve the endangered species of crocodile namely mugger crocodile, saltwater crocodile, and gharial. This is one of the reptile zoo, herpetology research station and the largest crocodile breeding site in the country. In this place apart from crocodiles, you can also see snakes, birds, chameleon, and tortoise. Few crocodiles which you can notice here are Morlet’s crocodile (Mexico), Dwarf crocodile (Africa), American Alligator (Africa), and Siamese crocodile.

The temple was built in 1993 spreading over to seven acres having Shirdi Sai Baba as the main deity. The statue of Sai Baba is completely made of marble. There are separate shrines for Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva, Lord Dattatreya, Goddess Parvati, Lord Karthigeya Goddess Durga, Lord Hanuman, Lord Vishnu, Lord Ram, Lord Krishna, and many other Gods. The view of the beach from the temple gives an exciting experience. The temple is filled with peacefulness and you can relax well here.

The temple is built over 1. 5 acres of land and it is the biggest Radha Krishna temple in Tamil Nadu. The main God is Lord Krishna and Goddess Rukmini. Other deities here are Lord Jagannath, Lord Baladeva, Goddess Subhadra and Gaura-Nitai. The temple has five levels and you can notice the chakras on the marble floor at the entrance. This chakra represents the bhu-mandal.

The backwater area of the Bay of Bengal is called as Muttukadu Lake. The view of the lake is awesome and it is best to visit during rainy season since the level of sea water will be high. Boating is very famous and many water sports are available. The Muttukadu boat house is the place where windsurfing, water skiing, rowing, speed boat riding are allowed. The roof of the boathouse is made of bamboo.

Nitya Kalyana Perumal Temple

Nitya Kalyana Perumal temple is located in Thiruvidanthai just 8 kilometers from Kovalam. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu who is in the form of varaham (Boar) and Goddess Komalavalli Nachiyaar (Goddess Lakshmi). The temple comes under 108 Divyadesam and it is built in the Dravidian style of architecture by Pallavas in the 7th century. Later Chola Kings developed the temple. Another thing is there is palanquin which is made from ivory. It is believed that people get married while visiting this temple.
