Marakkanam beach is located in the coastal town Marakkanam. It comes under Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu. Salt field is one of the popular attractions.
Marakkanam holds second place in salt production in Tamil Nadu. Buckingham Canal in Marakkanam was constructed by British Raj which was used for transferring goods in the nineteenth and twentieth century.
Bhoomeshwarar Temple

Kaliveli Lake
This lake is one of the largest wetlands in India and it is rich in flora and fauna. Several migrant birds come here during July and August. Kingfishers and Flamingos are famous birds here. Take time to visit this place and enjoy the nature.
Alamparai Fort
Alamparai Fort is at a distance of 20.2 Km from Marakkanam. This fort is also called as Alampara, Idaikazhinadu, Alamparva, and Alampuravi. It is dated to the 17th century and it was built during the Mughal period. They used it as port and several items were exported from here. Occupying 15 acres, the fort is made up of bricks and limestone. In 1750, the fort came under the control of French and at the time of Carnatic war, British took over the place. After which it was destroyed.

Chennai To Marakkanam
The distance between Chennai to Marakkanam is 123 KM and the travel time is around 3 hours. From Chennai you can reach Marakkanam through ECR road via Mahabalipuram and kalpakkam or through GST road via Chengalpattu and Madurantakam. There are direct buses from Chennai CMBT.
Travelling by road is the best option as there is no proper railway station in Marakkanam. If you want travel by train, then you need get down at Chengalpattu or Melmaruvathur railway station

The distance between Pondicherry and Marakkanam is around 35 Km and the travel time is around 1 hour. There are direct buses from Pondicherry.
