Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple is an ancient Hindu temple, which got ISO certified by Tamil Nadu Government. This temple is built over 2000 years ago. Mouna swamy is a saint who re-constructed the temple. It took about 72 years to complete the construction of this temple. Thiruchendur Murugan temple is the second temple among the six “Arupadai Veedu” of Lord Muruga.

Facts About Thiruchendur Murugan Temple

1. In Tamil Nadu, most of the temples are constructed by kings, but this temple was constructed by saints. According to local mythology, this temple has Nine Theerthams. bathing in any of these theertham is believed to bring magical benefits to the devotees.

2. The Thiruchendur Murugan temple is the only temple for Lord Murugan Located near the sea.This temple is located just 200 meters from the seashore.

3. The Dutch East India Company occupied the temple during the period of 1646 to 1648, when leaving the temple they looted everything including the idol of Lord Murgan. They thought that the idol was made of gold, but the idol of Lord Murgan was made of Panchalogam. During their voyage, they face a severe storm. Realising their mistake they dropped the idol in the sea and escaped from the storm. Later, Lord Murugan came in the dream of his devotee named Vadamaliyappa Pillai and informed the location of the idol and then the idol was recovered from the sea.

4. The Raja Gopuram was built over three hundred years ago by Sri Desikamoorthi swami. The Rajagopuram of the Thiruchendur Temple is 150 feet high with nine tiers.




5.When the Indian Ocean Tsunami hit the Coast of Tamil Nadu on December 26, 2004. It destroyed everything around the temple except this ancient site.

6. Lord Murugan created the well called Nali Kinaru by his spear to quench the thirst of his followers while fighting with Surapadman and other demons.

7. According to Hindu temples, this is the only Murugan temple where the Raja Gopuram is located at the west gate without an east gate.

8. The Gopuram is higher than the pesestal of Lord Murugan and it is always covered. This door will be opened during the “Kanda Shasti” festival. Devotees will not be allowed through that gate.

9. Lord Murugan was called “Jeyanthi Naathar” because he defeated Sorapadman. After a while this name become “Senthil Naathar” and the place was also called “Thirujeyenthipuram”, over time it became “Thiruchendur”.




Thiruchendur Murugan Temple Timings

• Thiruchendur Murugan Temple is located on the eastern edge of the town of Thiruchendur in the Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu.

• Thiruchendur Murugan temple is open from Monday to Sunday from 5.00 am to evening 9.00 pm.

• Poojas are performed in this temple according to the kumara Tantra system. A special pooja and procession of idols is held on the last Friday of every Tamil month.

• Nine pooja periods are observed daily with a 30 minutes break for decorations to god.




Pooja Timings of Thiruchendur Temple

Suprabhatham– First prayer of the day on which the door of the lord is opened is commonly called the Suprabhadam. This pooja will be held at 5.00 am.

Viswaroopam – This darshan is held for Devotees at 5.30 am.

Udhayamarthandam – This pooja is conducted daily from 6.15 to 7.00 am.

Mudal Kalasandi – We see the anointing in the vicinity of the garpagraham at 7.30 to 8.30 am.

Uchikalam – Uchi kala pooja is conducted around noon.

Sayaratchai – This pooja should start 5.00 pm and 90 minutes before sunset time of that day.

Ardha jaamam – This pooja is performed at 8.00 pm daily prior to closing.

Ekandam – This pooja starts at 8.30 pm 90 minutes before the closing time time of the temple.

Palliarai Theeparadhanai – This is the final pooja of the day which is generally happens around 9.00pm.




Festivals celebrated in Thiruchendur Murugan Temple

Vaikasi Visakam (May- June) : The festival is attened by a large number of devotees. The door to the Vaikasi Visakha sanctuary will open for Udaya Marthanda Anointing at 1.00 AM to 2.00 AM Sri jeyanthinath procession with valli and Deivanai takes place at night.

Avani festival (August- September): This is a 10 day festival held in this month of Avani.

Kandha Shasti festival (October- November): kandha sashti is an important festival celebrated for 7 days. On the 6th day of the festival, the event Surasamharam is enacted on the beach of Tiruchendur and on the 7th day his marriage to Theivannai is grandly celebrated.

Masi festival(Febrauary – March) : Masi festival is celebrated for 12 days during the month of Masi.




How to Reach Thiruchendur

By Air: The Nearest domestic airport is at Thoothukudi and there are regular flights to Thoothukudi from Chennai.

By Train: Thiruchendur and Thoothukud are the nearest railway junctions and it’s well connected with regular trains to Madurai, Trivandram and Chennai. The Sentur Express runs five days a week from Chennai.

By Bus: There is a bus stand near the temple. The buses are regularly available to Thiruchendur from Chennai, Puducherry, Coimbatore, Bangalore, Madurai, Rameswaram, and Tiruchirapalli.

The old church at this place was constructed 150 years ago and the original structure was damaged due to sea erosion. After this, the villagers decided to build new church at the same place. This was constructed at 1947 in the shape of Ship and the aeroplane over that ship.

It is one of the famous shrines of St. Anthony beside seashore. 450 years ago the crew of a Portuguese ship was affected by cholera. At that time one of the carpenters in the ship carved St Anthony’s image on a wood piece. After this, all the people in the crew regained their health. When the ship reached the seashore, the sailors form a statue of St, Anthony in Uvari. In 1940, the local people there built a church at that place in the shape of a ship.

3. Sri Suyambulinga Swami Temple

It is located at the distance of 2.7 km from Uvari, and this temple is dedicated to lord Siva. Sri Suyambulinga Swami Temple place is very peaceful and surrounded by Coconut and palm trees. Cuddalore town is the headquarters of the cuddalore district. The town was earlier called as Koodalur and later it got its current name Cuddalore. Cuddalore was an important town during the rule of Pallavas and Medieval Cholas.

Other Gods here are Lord Saniswarar, Goddess Durga, Lord Siddivinayagar, Lord Muruga, and more.

Vedaranyam is a historical town in Nagapattinam district, which is the coastal district of Tamil Nadu. It is named after the Vedaranyeswarar Temple, which is the presiding deity here.

It was once called as “Thirumaraikadu” It was ruled by the Medieval Cholas, Later Cholas, Later Pandyas, Vijayanagar Empire and the British.

Vedharanyam is renowned for Salt and Struggle. During the India’s Independence Struggle, British India’s last Governor-General Rajagopalachari launched a salt march here to raise voice and protest against the sales tax levied on salt extraction. It began in Trichi and ended here. This is equivalent to the Dandi March launched by Gandhi, who is “Father of our Nation” in April 1930. This March is also called as “Vedaranyam March” and “Vedaranyam Satyagraha”

Now, The Salt extraction and the prawn cultivation is the major occupation here. It is a part of the fertile Cauvery delta region.

A 13th-century saint, Paranjothi Munivar, was born at Vedaranyam. He is the author of the book Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.

The Salt Satyagraha in vedharanyam was organised by C. Rajagopalachari(Rajaji), India’s first Governor-General. It was a framework of nonviolent civil disobedience movement in British India. This Satyagraha was started in Thiruchirapalli and ended in Vedharanyam in the year 1930. As the remembrance of this salt satyagraha, a memorial was constructed near vedharanyam beach in 2007.

Nagore Dargah, Beach & Other Places To visit

Nagore is a town in the Nagapattinam district along the shore of Bay of Bengal. It is famous for pilgrimage located approximately 12 km south of Karaikal and 5 km north of Nagapattinam.

Madhya Kailash Temple is dedicated to Venkata Ananda Vinayakar and there is also a separate place for Lord Siva, Surya, Devi, and Vishnu. Anna Samadhi was built in memory of the form CM of Tamil Nadu Dr Anna Durai. He was laid to rest here in the year 1969. From Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) there are several direct buses to Marina Beach. The travel distance between CMBT and Marina beach is around 11 Km and it will take around 40 mins of travel. Here are the bus numbers that will directly take to Marina beach from CMBT 27B, S27B and Z27B. All these buses are from CMBT to Anna Square.

Egmore to Marina Beach

Egmore being one of the major railway stations in Chennai gives you multiple mode of transport to marina beach. If you want to travel by train, then you can reach Beach station and from Beach station you can take an MRTS train and get down at Chepauk or Triplicane MRTS station. From these stations you can reach Marina beach in 15 to 30 mins walk.

By bus, the distance between Egmore to Marina beach is around 4.5 Km and it will take around 15 mins of travel. You can use the bus numbers 27B, 29A, S27D, S27B and 27D to reach marina beach from Egmore.

Chennai Central to Marina beach

From Chennai Central, you can again reach Beach station and then take an MRTS train to reach Marina Beach by getting down at Chepauk or Triplicane.

By bus, the distance between Chennai Central and Marina Beach is around 4 KM and it will take around 15 mins of travel. You can use the bus numbers 32A, 102C, 21L to reach Chennai Central to Marina beach.

Winter (November – February)
