Uvari Beach – Why You Should Visit This Town To Relive The History

Uvari is a coastal village in Radhapuram Taluk, Thirunelveli District. It was ruled by Pandiyan kingdom. The ancient name of Uvari was “Obeer Pattanam”, where the people lived in this place are called as “Bharathar’s of the Neithal World”.

It has famous Hindu temple named Suyambu Lingadamy Temple and two churches as Kapppal Matha Church, St. Anthony’s Church. Uvari also has many tourist spots in nearby areas. Uvari pincode is 627651.

Best time to visit Uvari

Winter (November to January) is best time to enjoy the sightseeing and other tourist spots in Uvari. During this period, the maximum temperature is 30 to 32°C and the minimum temperature is about 22 to 23°C

How To Reach Uvari

Even tough Uvari is in Thirunelveli district, it is of equal distance from Thirunelveli town, Thoothukudi and Nagercoil. So, you can get down at either of these town and take a bus or cab to reach Uvari.

1. Uvari Beach

It is a beautiful beach situated 2.8km from Uvari. There is a famous church located at this beach, which is known as “Kappal Matha church”. The old church at this place was constructed 150 years ago and the original structure was damaged due to sea erosion. After this, the villagers decided to build new church at the same place. This was constructed at 1947 in the shape of Ship and the aeroplane over that ship.

2. St. Anthoney’s Church (Kappal Matha Church)

It is one of the famous shrines of St. Anthony beside seashore. 450 years ago the crew of a Portuguese ship was affected by cholera. At that time one of the carpenters in the ship carved St Anthony’s image on a wood piece. After this, all the people in the crew regained their health. When the ship reached the seashore, the sailors form a statue of St, Anthony in Uvari. In 1940, the local people there built a church at that place in the shape of a ship.

3. Sri Suyambulinga Swami Temple

It is located at the distance of 2.7 km from Uvari, and this temple is dedicated to lord Siva. Sri Suyambulinga Swami Temple place is very peaceful and surrounded by Coconut and palm trees. The temple is very near to the seashore and has four water springs with drinking water. This is the only temple where the sunrays fall on lord Siva for the whole month of Margazhi (December – January).

4. Manapad Beach

It is located in tiny and beautiful coastal village, which is 26 km from Uvari. Manapad beach gives you the experience of best sightseeing and you can enjoy many water sports here like water surfing, kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, paddling and so on. There is a famous holly cross church near to this beach.

Uvari is around 25 Km from Manapad, which is storng becoming one of the best spots for beach activities in Tamil Nadu. In manapad, you have a lots of adventure water activities like kayaking, scuba diving, paddle surfing and so on.
